If you do not buy your
own health insurance, you
may not be familiar with
something called a
high-deductible health plan,
or HDHP. Generally, with
this type of plan, you agree
to a high deductible of
$1,000 or more in exchange
for a greatly reduced
monthly premium.

Many employers are offering HDHPs as a health-care choice, something you may
be offered during your next open-enrollment period. Should you make the switch?
You should if you are healthy, because you will save big — not so much because
of the lower premium but because you may be able to open an IRS-approved
health-savings account, or HAS, to go along with your HDHP.
